Police: Downtown Nashville incident involved alleged sexual battery, traffic danger and car damage
A 34-year-old man faces seven charges after police say he sexually battered a woman, entered an active roadway and damaged a car near Fourth Avenue North and Commerce Street. Officers used a Taser before taking him into custody, according to an affidavit.
A 34-year-old man faces seven charges after an incident in downtown Nashville on Thursday, Oct. 15, in which he allegedly sexually battered a woman, damaged a car and walked into traffic, according to police and court records.
Police received multiple calls about a naked man acting aggressively near Fourth Avenue North and Commerce Street, an affidavit states. Bystanders reported that he was in the roadway, trying car doors and forcibly kissing a woman who had approached to help him.
The woman told police the man grabbed her head and kissed her without consent, then made a thrusting motion against her and masturbated in front of her, according to the affidavit.
A separate witness said the man climbed onto the hood of his car and cracked the windshield with his elbow. Police said surveillance video captured the alleged battery and property damage, as well as the man walking into and lying in the roadway.
The man, identified by police as David Katz, allegedly became hostile and advanced toward an officer who told him to move onto the sidewalk. The officer used a Taser, then handcuffed him. The affidavit described Katz as highly intoxicated and aggressive.
Katz is charged with sexual battery, indecent exposure, public indecency, vandalism involving $1,000 or less, disorderly conduct, obstructing a passageway and public intoxication. Court records list bonds of $15,000 for the sexual battery charge, $2,000 for indecent exposure, $1,000 each for the vandalism and passageway charges, and $500 each for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. The public indecency charge has no bond listed.
A judge is scheduled to review the case on Nov. 20. The charges are allegations; court proceedings will determine their outcome.
