Hamilton Avenue bridge demolition will shut Nashville’s I-65 through Monday morning

TDOT plans to close I-65 in both directions near downtown from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. Several nearby ramps will also close, and overnight lane restrictions are expected as crews rebuild the bridge deck.

Hamilton Avenue bridge demolition will shut Nashville’s I-65 through Monday morning

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Interstate 65 will close in both directions near downtown Nashville this weekend while crews demolish the deck of the Hamilton Avenue bridge, the Tennessee Department of Transportation said.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, and end by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. It will extend from the I-40 interchange at Exit 210 to near the I-440 interchange at Exit 80, affecting a heavily traveled connection among the three interstates.

TDOT has added three ramp closures to its traffic plan: the I-65 northbound entrance ramp from Armory Drive, and both northbound and southbound I-65 entrance ramps from Powell Avenue. The agency said those closures are intended to prevent traffic conflicts where drivers merge from I-65 onto I-440 during the demolition.

Drivers should allow extra travel time and use alternate routes. Electronic message boards and overhead signs will provide directions around the work zone.

After the weekend closure, TDOT expects intermittent overnight lane closures on I-65, generally from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., as crews construct the replacement bridge deck. The Hamilton Avenue bridge will remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians until the work is finished in December.
