Antioch shooting leaves 35-year-old hospitalized as police examine account of attempted robbery
A 31-year-old man told Metro Nashville police he shot another man in self-defense at a Bell Road shopping center early Sunday. The injured 35-year-old remained in critical condition, and no charges had been filed as investigators examined the claim.
A 35-year-old man was hospitalized with a critical head wound after a shooting early Sunday at a shopping center on Bell Road in Antioch, Metro Nashville police said. Investigators are reviewing a 31-year-old man’s claim that he fired in self-defense; no charges had been filed as of Sunday, Oct. 25.
Police said the shooting was reported around 5:20 a.m. at 486 Bell Road, in the 300 block of the road. The injured man was receiving treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with what police described as a “very critical head wound.”
The 31-year-old told officers the other man had a gun and was trying to rob him in the parking lot when he shot him in the head, according to police. He said the two had encountered each other earlier that night at a hookah lounge, where, he alleged, the 35-year-old asked to buy cocaine. The 31-year-old said he declined and left, police reported.
After the shooting, the 31-year-old drove away. Officers stopped him on Bell Road about three minutes later, police said. He told officers he had been heading back to meet them, but later said he left because he feared for his safety.
Police said investigators recovered two guns, one at the scene and another from the 31-year-old’s vehicle. The circumstances of the shooting, including the self-defense claim, remain under investigation.
