Atlanta man dies after downtown Nashville bar dispute; investigation continues

A 45-year-old Atlanta man died Sunday after an altercation outside a bar on Second Avenue North in downtown Nashville, according to Metro Nashville police.

Police said the confrontation involving Torey Ward and Keith King Jr., 37, of Nashville, happened about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 25. An encounter inside the bar between King and Ward’s girlfriend caused a commotion, and the people involved were asked to leave, police said.

Witnesses told police that King punched Ward and held him in a chokehold. King told police he acted out of fear for his safety, according to the department.

Ward was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

No charges had been filed against King as of Sunday. Police said the investigation is ongoing, and any charging decision will be made by the district attorney’s office.
