Milwaukee’s World Series wait meets Tampa Bay’s history-making bid

Milwaukee’s World Series wait meets Tampa Bay’s history-making bid

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers are returning to the World Series for the first time in 44 years, where they will face the Tampa Bay Rays in a matchup that guarantees one franchise its first championship.

Tampa Bay secured its place by defeating the Cleveland Guardians in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Monday. The Rays’ previous World Series appearances came in 2008, when they lost to Philadelphia, and 2020, when they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.

Milwaukee has reached the Fall Classic once before. The Brewers’ 1982 series against the St. Louis Cardinals went to a seventh game, ending in a loss. The team’s postseason run still brought a parade in Milwaukee, and later became the subject of the documentary “Just a Bit Outside.”

The series also brings former Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta back to face his old team. Peralta spent eight seasons in Milwaukee before being traded in January in a deal involving the New York Mets. Tampa Bay acquired him Aug. 2, shortly before the trade deadline. In the Rays’ Game 6 win over Cleveland, Peralta allowed one earned run and five hits, striking out three over 5⅓ innings.

The teams met three times during the regular season, with Milwaukee winning two games at American Family Field. The Brewers will host the first two games before the series shifts to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Game 1 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at American Family Field. Game 2 is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Tampa Bay on Monday, Oct. 26, and Tuesday, Oct. 27. If needed, Game 5 is Wednesday, Oct. 28, in Tampa Bay; Game 6 is Friday, Oct. 30, in Milwaukee; and Game 7 is Saturday, Oct. 31, also at American Family Field.
