A 1982 World Series keepsake marks a Brewers fan’s 44-year wait
Bob Cummings has preserved his two $18 tickets to Game 5 of the 1982 World Series, when Milwaukee faced St. Louis at County Stadium. As the Brewers prepare for their first trip back to the Fall Classic since then, he plans to watch from home, citing ticket costs and mobility challenges.
MILWAUKEE — Bob Cummings still has the two tickets he bought for Game 5 of the 1982 World Series, when the Milwaukee Brewers played the St. Louis Cardinals at County Stadium. They cost $18 apiece. He has kept the stubs tucked into his original World Series program for 44 years.
With Milwaukee preparing for its first World Series appearance since 1982, the souvenirs have taken on new meaning for the lifelong fan. The Brewers lost that series in seven games, but Cummings remembers the game he attended as the most exhilarating sporting event of his life.
“You can’t imagine the excitement that I went through when I got these tickets,” he said. He described the keepsakes as memories he cannot let go of.
Cummings said attending Game 5 gave him hope that the Brewers would reach the World Series again. “I waited, and they made it,” he said.
This time, he expects to follow the team from home. The rising price of World Series tickets and his mobility challenges make going to the games difficult, he said.
Asked what a Brewers championship would mean to him, Cummings grew emotional. “Everything. I’m at the end of my road. This is my last chance to see them win a World Series,” he said.
He plans to cheer the team on from home, still holding the tickets from the last time Milwaukee played for a championship.
