Milwaukee rallies past Los Angeles, books first World Series trip in 44 years

The Milwaukee Brewers are headed to the World Series for the first time since 1982 after overcoming an early four-run hole to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on Thursday, Oct. 15. The win completed a sweep of the Dodgers and sent Milwaukee on to the championship round.

Shohei Ohtani put Los Angeles ahead 4-0 with a three-run homer in the second inning. Milwaukee began its comeback in the fourth, when Jake Bauers hit a ground-rule double that brought home William Contreras and Brice Turang. David Hamilton’s fifth-inning single scored Sal Frelick, who had stolen second, and Bauers later drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.

Garrett Mitchell gave the Brewers the lead in the sixth with a 409-foot home run. Hamilton added a solo homer in the ninth to make it 6-4, and Aaron Ashby retired the Dodgers in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s something you dream about as a kid,” team captain Christian Yelich said. He added that Milwaukee still had its ultimate goal ahead and would need to refocus for the World Series. Ashby said after the game, “I’d die for any of these dudes, man. It’s unbelievable. This team’s awesome.”

The Brewers have lost once in the playoffs, falling to the San Diego Padres in Game 3. They will face either the Cleveland Guardians or Tampa Bay Rays, the teams competing in the American League Championship Series. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, with game times to be announced.
