Milwaukee’s seventh-inning power puts Dodgers on brink in NLCS
Back-to-back home runs by Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell helped the Brewers rally past Los Angeles 6-2 and take a 3-0 lead in the NLCS. Milwaukee can clinch a World Series berth in Game 4 on Thursday at Dodger Stadium.
LOS ANGELES — The Milwaukee Brewers are one win from the World Series after rallying for a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday night.
Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell hit consecutive home runs in the seventh inning to put Milwaukee back in front. The victory gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series and left the two-time defending champion Dodgers facing elimination. Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday at Dodger Stadium.
Los Angeles had taken a 2-1 lead in the sixth on Will Smith’s two-run double against reliever Abner Uribe. Smith, who entered the game batting .043 in the NLCS, collected his first hit of the series with the bases loaded.
The Brewers answered in the seventh against Blake Snell, who had retired 14 straight batters. Andrew Vaughn drew a seven-pitch walk to open the inning, then Christian Yelich entered as a pinch-runner. Bauers worked an 11-pitch at-bat before sending a 412-foot home run to right field. Mitchell followed with a 428-foot solo shot to right-center, ending Snell’s night and giving Milwaukee a 3-2 advantage.
Snell allowed four runs and four hits over six innings, striking out nine and walking two. Jackson Chourio had opened the game with a home run off the two-time Cy Young Award winner.
Milwaukee added two runs late. Brice Turang scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, and Joey Ortiz drove in another run with a two-strike single in the ninth.
The Dodgers had runners on base in all but three innings but struggled to convert their chances. They have not hit a home run in the series. Shohei Ohtani went 1 for 2 with a walk while batting sixth, his lowest spot in the lineup since joining Los Angeles three years ago.
A win Thursday would send the Brewers to the World Series and complete a sharp reversal from last year, when Los Angeles eliminated Milwaukee in four games. The Brewers have not previously beaten the Dodgers in their three postseason series against them. Los Angeles has trailed 0-3 in a best-of-seven postseason series only once before, when Baltimore swept the Dodgers in the 1966 World Series.
