Contreras’ homer sparks Brewers’ 7-4 win and 2-0 NLCS advantage
MILWAUKEE — The Brewers moved within two wins of the National League pennant Monday, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series at American Family Field. Milwaukee took control after William Contreras tied the game with a 436-foot home run to center field in the fifth inning. With the score knotted at 4 in the sixth, David Hamilton reached second after an errant pickoff throw, then scored on Contreras’ single to left. Brice Turang and Jake Bauers added run-scoring singles in the eighth. The Brewers’ relievers shut down Los Angeles after Milwaukee’s Logan Henderson left following four innings. Dustin May, JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby combined to retire the Dodgers’ final 15 batters in order. Milwaukee’s bullpen has given up one earned run in 28⅔ innings this postseason. The game swung repeatedly early. Los Angeles took the lead three times in the first five innings, but Milwaukee answered each time. Christian Yelich’s two-run single in the third helped knock Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto out of the game after 2⅔ innings, his shortest postseason start. He entered Monday with an 8-1 record and a 2.14 ERA in 11 career playoff appearances. “He just didn’t have it tonight, which is very rare,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. Los Angeles scored twice in the fifth to tie the game at 4, aided by two throwing errors from Henderson. The Dodgers managed three hits overall and went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position, leaving them 2 for 26 in those situations this postseason. The best-of-seven series now moves to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Wednesday. Robert Gasser is expected to start for Milwaukee. The Brewers are pursuing their second pennant and first in the National League; their only World Series appearance came in 1982, when the team played in the American League. The Dodgers, two-time defending champions, are seeking a third consecutive World Series title.
