Francesca Hong is taking her campaign to communities across Wisconsin after losing the Democratic gubernatorial primary, but she has not committed to appearing on the trail with the party’s nominee, David Crowley, before the Nov. 3 election. Hong launched what she calls her “We make better possible trifecta tour” with events in Milwaukee and Beloit over the weekend. She plans to visit Stevens Point, Menomonie, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Madison and Ashland in the run-up to Election Day. Hong described the effort as a way to campaign for Democrats and build turnout across the ballot. She said she and Crowley have kept in contact and that her work could help strengthen his ground operation, but did not pledge to campaign with him publicly. She also said Crowley should make clear to her supporters that he stands with working-class families and shares some of their policy priorities. Electing Democrats, she said, is necessary to advance a progressive agenda. Hong, a democratic socialist, said she was surprised by her primary loss. Asked if she would have done anything differently, she joked that she would not have canceled Thanksgiving, referring to past social media posts calling for the holiday to be canceled. Hong said she regretted a CNN interview shortly before the primary in which she did not directly say whether she stood by those posts. The general-election contest pits Crowley against Republican Tom Tiffany. Jessica Taylor, who edits U.S. Senate and gubernatorial coverage for the Cook Political Report, said the race remains rated a toss-up and could be reassessed after a new Marquette Law School poll. Taylor said Crowley may be a stronger nominee than Hong would have been, while describing Tiffany as a strong Republican candidate in a challenging political environment.
