MILWAUKEE — Two reporters from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel were denied entry to a Tom Tiffany campaign event in Milwaukee on Thursday, while a photographer from the newspaper was allowed inside, according to accounts at the event. A campaign staffer, Eric Brooks, told one of the reporters the outlet had not covered the race fairly. The reporter disputed that assessment and said the journalists wanted to cover the event because veterans were an important issue. Tiffany, the Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, answered questions after the event. He said he had maintained an open policy toward the media and regularly spoke with reporters after campaign events. He also said he would speak with his communications team about what happened, noting that a Journal Sentinel employee had been inside taking photographs. The exclusion came two days after Tiffany was asked about the White House’s recent ban on several news organizations. He told reporters then that he would allow all reporters to cover his events. The campaign indicated Thursday that the decision did not amount to a blanket ban on the Journal Sentinel. There was no indication that the campaign had sought to bar other news organizations, including WISN 12, which was inside the event. The incident raises questions about media access as voters approach the Nov. 3 gubernatorial election. Tiffany and Democratic nominee David Crowley are scheduled to take part in their only debate on Oct. 21.
