WASHINGTON — Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said Sept. 24 that Vice President JD Vance had not responded to his requests for a meeting about a federal investigation into the city’s 2020 election, despite publicly inviting Johnson to Washington earlier this summer. Johnson said in a social media post that he was in the nation’s capital and had received no response to either his initial letter or a follow-up. He said he wanted to discuss the investigation and explain Milwaukee’s election procedures. “ In Milwaukee, we run elections that are transparent, that are accurate, that are safe, and that are fair,” Johnson said. He has described the city’s election administration as a matter officials take seriously. The exchange began after federal agents interviewed current and former Milwaukee election officials as part of a probe into the city’s 2020 election handling. The investigation includes scrutiny of nearly 180,000 absentee ballots cast in Milwaukee that year. Johnson’s initial letter questioned what evidence prompted the investigation and accused agents of intimidating election workers. When Vance visited Milwaukee in July, Johnson sought a meeting and a tour of the city’s election operations. The meeting did not take place. Vance acknowledged receiving the mayor’s letter and invited him to Washington, saying he would sit down with Johnson. Johnson said then that he planned to be in Washington during the week of Sept. 21. On Sept. 24, he criticized Vance for not meeting with him and questioned whether the vice president considered the issue important. During his July visit, Vance said Johnson’s objections to the investigation made him wonder why the mayor was protesting so forcefully. Johnson responded by asking what evidence of voter fraud existed in Milwaukee. It was not immediately clear whether Vance’s office had replied to Johnson’s letters or meeting request.
