XPosed 4Heads’ New Video Turns Outsiderhood Into a Milwaukee-Made Musical
The Milwaukee band’s new single, “Let’s Be Weird,” pairs an outsider anthem with surreal scenes inspired by classic movie musicals. XPosed 4Heads is also set to play its annual New Wave Fest at the Cooperage on Oct. 17.
Milwaukee band XPosed 4Heads has released “Let’s Be Weird,” a new single and video that uses absurdist imagery to make a case for embracing people who don’t fit in.
Mark G.E. developed the video with his son, filmmaker Alex Eberhage, drawing inspiration from Dick Van Dyke’s chimney-sweep dance in “Mary Poppins” and the musical “Singin’ in the Rain.” The result includes chimpanzees at a corporate meeting, dog people eating doughnuts and cowboys riding bananas.
G.E. said the song is meant to connect with people across different outsider communities, rather than single out one group. The chimps at the conference table, he explained, are “doing monkey business,” while the singer feels out of place.
The new release arrives ahead of the band’s performance at New Wave Fest on Oct. 17 at the Cooperage. G.E. organizes the annual autumn event, whose lineup includes The First Wave, a dark-wave tribute act with a Depeche Mode influence, and Mixtape, a B-52s tribute featuring singer Suzanne Sexton Singh. G.E. and XPosed 4Heads member Kelp Chofs will back Singh.
The band’s offbeat style has roots in performance art and ‘80s new wave, including DEVO, one of G.E.’s formative influences. XPosed 4Heads has performed twice at the Cleveland DEVOtional festival, according to G.E.
G.E. also recalled growing up in 1970s Milwaukee, when the East Side served as a gathering place for people who felt out of step with the surrounding culture. He described it as an alternative and a safer place for those who did not feel they belonged elsewhere.
The band is also scheduled to appear at the annual Krampusnacht event at Pabst Best Place in December.
