Racine woman charged after four flags burned outside Harbor Lite Yacht Club
Emaleth Elaine Johnson, 26, faces arson, property damage and disorderly conduct charges after a fire at the State Street yacht club Thursday night. A witness and others put out the flames, according to a criminal complaint.
A 26-year-old Racine woman is charged with setting fire to four American flags outside the Harbor Lite Yacht Club on State Street Thursday night, according to a criminal complaint.
Police were called to the club at about 8:57 p.m. Oct. 8. A witness told officers they saw Emaleth Elaine Johnson lighting a flag, the complaint says. The witness and others took down the burning flags and extinguished them.
Johnson faces charges of arson of property other than a building, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct. A yacht club member told police the flags were worth about $120 and had not been authorized to burn them, according to the complaint.
At a court appearance Friday, Johnson described the fire as “a controlled burn.” A court commissioner set a competency hearing for next month and released Johnson on a $1,500 signature bond.
The charges are allegations, and Johnson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
