Wauwatosa campus brings county medical examiner, state crime lab together
Milwaukee County and Wisconsin leaders opened a $245 million forensic and emergency-management complex near Wauwatosa’s hospital campus. The building brings the county medical examiner, emergency management officials and the state crime lab under one roof, with an organ and tissue bank also planned there.
WAUWATOSA, Wis. — Milwaukee County and state leaders marked the opening of a $245 million facility near Wauwatosa’s hospital campus, bringing several forensic and public-safety operations together in one location.
The complex houses the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, the county Office of Emergency Management and the Wisconsin Department of Justice crime lab. The Medical Examiner’s Office moved from downtown Milwaukee to the new building in September, according to officials.
The state and county jointly funded the project, with the Medical College of Wisconsin involved in its development. Officials say the shared location is intended to help investigators and other professionals work more closely. The facility also includes an Organ Procurement and Tissue Bank to support donation efforts.
Milwaukee County District Attorney Kent Lovern said the facility will provide resources for major public-safety investigations. He also pointed to the expanded Medical Examiner’s Office as a way to improve collaboration between medical and law-enforcement professionals and better serve families seeking answers after a loved one’s death.
The opening brings investigative, emergency-management and medical examiner functions together in a county facility designed to support both investigations and services for families.
