Madison police are investigating possible hazing after officers found 30 people in the basement of an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house Wednesday night, including several with injuries officers said appeared consistent with physical assault. Police said they went to the house near Carroll and Langdon streets after receiving an anonymous tip. Most of the people found there were 18, according to investigators, and they were covered with food, condiments and other liquids. The basement thermostat was set to 81 degrees, creating hot and humid conditions, police said. Officers arrested Brayden Klein, 20, and Samuel Vane, 20. Both were booked into jail on suspicion of hazing and disorderly conduct. The arrests do not establish guilt, and police have not publicly described what led to the reported injuries or whether additional arrests are expected. The University of Wisconsin-Madison said the fraternity organization’s university recognition was terminated in 2015. The chapter remains recognized by its national organization and may operate as a fraternity unaffiliated with the university, the university said. The investigation concerns an organization operating outside the university’s recognition system, a distinction that can affect the institution’s formal oversight. Police have not released further details about the incident or the people found at the house.
