A former assistant track coach at Greenfield High School was sentenced Thursday, Sept. 24, to seven years in prison for child enticement and sexually assaulting a student who was 15 at the time. Bennet Schmitz persuaded the student to meet him multiple times at his home and at hotels between April and July 2024, court records say. He was coaching in Greenfield during that period. The student told investigators she felt pressured to keep communicating with Schmitz because he was her coach, according to court records. He also threatened to die by suicide if she stopped communicating with him, the records say. Schmitz pleaded guilty to the charges in July. A judge imposed concurrent sentences of seven years and four years, so the terms will be served at the same time. The court also ordered him to have no contact with the victim and to register as a sex offender for life.
