Milwaukee’s South Side will host a week of restaurant deals and community events beginning Sunday, Sept. 27, as more than 30 restaurants take part in Southside Dining Week through Oct. 3. Participating businesses are offering discounted meals, from Mexican specialties to Thai noodles and Laotian fish salad. At La Esperanza Restaurant y Taqueria, 2028 W. Mitchell St., diners can get a carne a la Esperanza huarache — a handmade corn-dough base topped with refried beans and a choice of protein — with a soda or horchata for $9.99. Other featured offers include mole de pollo with rice, tortillas and a soda for $16.99 at Del Valle Oaxaqueño Restaurante, 1100 W. Historic Mitchell St.; birria tacos with rice, beans and a soda for $17.50 at El Tlaxcalteca Restaurant, 1300 W. Burnham St.; and pad thai or pad see ew with a choice of protein and a soda for $12.95 at Thai Barbque, 3417 W. National Ave. Vientiane Noodle Shop, 3422 W. National Ave., is serving larp fish, a Laotian fish salad, for $15.99. The opening event, “Come Taste the Southside,” runs from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Zócalo Food Park, 636 S. 6th St. Tres Hermanos, El Tlaxcalteca, Los Gemelos Tacos and Sabor a Pueblo Bakery will provide free bites while supplies last. Chefs Latinos Wisconsin will lead interactive cooking demonstrations, and live music is scheduled from Funk Summit Bass Team at noon, Klan 414 at 1:30 p.m. and Diet Lite at 3 p.m. The participating restaurants span neighborhoods across the South Side and include Anytime Arepa Gluten Free Kitchen, Café el Sol, El Rey Plaza Taco Loco, La Guelaguetza, Taqueria Los Gallos, Transfer Pizzeria Café and Tres Hermanos Restaurant. Deals and menus vary by restaurant; diners can check with individual businesses for details. Southside Dining Week runs Sept. 27-Oct. 3, giving residents and visitors a chance to try neighborhood restaurants and support local businesses.
