Five homes near Milwaukee’s Lincoln Park were evacuated Friday evening after a construction crew damaged a gas line near 20th Street and Hampton Avenue, the Milwaukee Fire Department said. Firefighters received reports of the leak at about 7:13 p.m. Police advised nearby residents to leave while We Energies crews worked to repair the pipe. The leak was eventually stopped, and no customers lost gas service, a We Energies spokesperson said. Fire officials said the five evacuated homes were checked and deemed safe. We Energies was still investigating the precise cause of the damage. The incident prompted a temporary evacuation but caused no reported service interruption.
