Racine County Sheriff's Capt. Cary Madrigal Placed on Administrative Leave as Officials Review Her Conduct in Investigation
Capt. Cary Madrigal, who lost Tuesday's race for Racine County sheriff to Donald Vandervest, has been placed on administrative leave while officials review her actions related to an investigation involving another person. Officials say she is not the subject of the criminal investigation and the case is unrelated to the recent elections.
RACINE COUNTY, Wis. â A captain in the Racine County Sheriff's Office has been placed on administrative leave while officials review her handling of an investigation involving another person, the department confirmed.
Capt. Cary Madrigal is not the subject of the criminal investigation, officials said, and the matter is not connected to the recent elections.
The leave comes days after Madrigal lost Tuesday's race for Racine County sheriff to Donald Vandervest. Officials did not say whether the timing of the leave was related to the election outcome, and they released no further details about the investigation or the conduct under review.
Administrative leave is a standard personnel step that removes an employee from active duty while an agency examines allegations or circumstances. It is not itself a finding of wrongdoing.
The sheriff's office did not say who is conducting the review, how long it is expected to take, or what specific actions by Madrigal are being examined. Officials also did not identify the other person involved in the underlying investigation.
Madrigal's placement on leave leaves the department without one of its captains as the office prepares for a transition in leadership following Vandervest's victory. Residents seeking information about the case are directed to the sheriff's office, which has not announced a timeline for releasing further details.
The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
