Milwaukee man charged with firing shots at kids at bus stop
A 50-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of firing a handgun at two juveniles who had just stepped off a county bus near North 12th and West Burleigh streets, then leading police on a foot chase that ended with his arrest and the recovery of a discarded 9 mm pistol and cocaine, according to a criminal complaint.
A 50-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with multiple felonies after authorities say he fired a handgun at two juveniles who had just gotten off a Milwaukee County Transit System bus near North 12th and West Burleigh streets, then fled from police and tossed a loaded weapon into a field, according to a criminal complaint.
Ive James Adams was arrested Monday and faces charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession with intent to deliver cocaine. No one was injured in the shooting, and the two people who were fired upon have not been publicly identified.
The incident began Monday afternoon when several juveniles boarded a county bus at the Riverside High School stop. According to the complaint, Adams got on the already crowded bus at the Richards Street stop without paying the fare. As the bus continued past North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, a commotion broke out in the back of the vehicle, with children yelling at someone to get off.
When the bus reached the North 12th Street stop, a juvenile in a gray hoodie and a younger person stepped off. Adams followed them, reached into his coat for a handgun and fired at the fleeing juveniles, the complaint states.
ShotSpotter, the city's gunshot-detection system, recorded two rounds fired at about 3:55 p.m. in the area of 1125 W. Burleigh St. Surveillance video captured both the verbal altercation and the gunfire, according to the complaint.
Transit security guards kept watch on the suspect from a distance until Milwaukee police arrived. Officers found Adams clutching a large black coat near North 16th and West Hadley streets. When they approached, he ran, ignoring commands to stop.
During the foot pursuit, officers saw Adams throw a black 9 mm pistol into a field at 2969 N. 20th St., the complaint says. He was taken into custody in a rear alley shortly afterward. Investigators later recovered a spent shell casing in front of 3105 N. 11th St. that matched an unfired cartridge found in the magazine of the discarded weapon.
A search of Adams turned up a clear plastic bag holding eight smaller bags of a white, rock-like substance that tested positive for cocaine, along with a digital scale in his jacket pocket, according to the complaint.
Court records show Adams has a prior felony conviction for strangulation and suffocation from 2017. The investigation remains ongoing.
