Brookfield gym truck theft ends in Illinois arrest; loaded gun found, police say
A Brookfield couple said their truck was stolen during an early-morning workout Friday at Crunch Fitness on Capitol Drive. Police say the woman suspected of taking it was arrested later that day in Oak Lawn, Illinois, after a chase and a minor crash; officers reported finding a loaded gun in the truck’s glove box. The couple, Shannika and Desmond McClain, said the incident began around 4 a.m. Desmond McClain noticed a woman arguing with gym front-desk staff and briefly set down his belongings while trying to calm the situation. He later realized, he said, that she had taken his keys. Brookfield police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Amy Jones. The McClains said they recognized her after seeing a news report Friday evening. They had not yet been reunited with their truck as of the report. Oak Lawn police, in suburban Chicago about 90 miles from Brookfield, said Jones was arrested Friday afternoon following a pursuit and minor crash. They said they recovered a loaded firearm from the truck. Oak Lawn police were referring several potential charges, including reckless driving and unlawful use of a weapon, to prosecutors; the report did not say that charges had been filed in Illinois. Jones had been released Tuesday on a signature bond in a separate Milwaukee case. Prosecutors in that case accused her of posing as a substitute teacher at Rufus King High School and making inappropriate remarks to students. Those accusations remain allegations. The McClains said the gun in the truck was their main concern. They described the episode as frightening but said they were relieved it ended without anyone being hurt.
