Willis’ fourth-down run seals Miami’s 28-25 win over New York
Malik Willis threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and converted a pivotal fourth-and-1 to give the Dolphins their first win under coach Jeff Hafley. Miami held off a late Jets rally to improve to 1-5.
Malik Willis’ two touchdown passes and a late fourth-down run helped the Miami Dolphins secure a 28-25 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, giving coach Jeff Hafley his first victory with the team.
Miami (1-5) led 28-17 late in the fourth quarter, but the Jets cut the margin to three with 3:24 remaining. New York’s Geno Smith connected with tight end Mason Taylor for a 12-yard touchdown after Isaiah Davis turned a short catch on fourth-and-4 into a 41-yard gain. The Jets’ first two attempts at a two-point conversion were wiped out by penalties; Smith found Taylor on the next try to make it 28-25.
The Dolphins faced fourth-and-1 at the Jets’ 49-yard line near the two-minute warning. Rather than punt, Hafley consulted his offensive linemen and kept the offense on the field. Willis pushed up the middle for 2 yards, allowing Miami to run out the clock.
“He trusted us, and we trusted him,” Willis said.
Willis completed 14 of 21 passes for 208 yards and two scores to rookie Caleb Douglas. He also ran eight times for 37 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown just before halftime and the decisive fourth-down conversion.
Miami opened the scoring with a 76-yard drive capped by Willis’ 7-yard pass to Douglas. The Jets answered with Smith’s 13-yard touchdown throw to Taylor, son of former Dolphins star Jason Taylor. Miami regained the lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by De’Von Achane?
The Dolphins’ scoring drives included a 1-yard touchdown run by Gordon, who finished with 103 rushing yards. Willis added his rushing touchdown before halftime to put Miami ahead. In the third quarter, New York’s Omar Cooper Jr. caught a 3-yard score after a 60-yard reception, and the Jets later settled for a field goal after reaching Miami’s 1-yard line.
Douglas’ second touchdown, a 63-yard catch-and-run with 4:44 left, put Miami ahead 28-17 and proved crucial as the Jets mounted their final push.
Smith finished 23 of 30 for 287 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Taylor had two touchdown catches, and Braelon Allen rushed for 104 yards. New York fell to 2-5 and remained winless in eight AFC East games under coach Aaron Glenn.
The win came after Miami’s bye week and spared the Dolphins an 0-6 start. Hafley, who grew up in Montvale, New Jersey, about 20 minutes from MetLife Stadium, celebrated in front of roughly 30 friends and family members. Players doused him with water in the locker room after the game.
“They deserve it,” Hafley said of his players. “They did a great job.”
Miami next hosts New England, while the Jets host Las Vegas. Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright left with a quadriceps injury, and safety Dante Trader Jr. injured his left shoulder. Cornerback JuJu Brents returned after leaving with a stinger. Jets defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat left with a knee injury and did not return.
