The Hurricanes rose two places to No. 1 in the poll released Sunday, Oct. 18, following a double-overtime victory over rival Florida State. Miami received 40 of 70 first-place votes and leads No. 2 BYU by 22 points.

The result puts an Atlantic Coast Conference team atop the poll for the first time since Clemson in 2020. Miami last held the No. 1 ranking after the 2002 season, which ended with a loss to Ohio State in the national championship game.

BYU made its highest poll appearance since its 1984 national championship season, moving to No. 2 after a 28-24 home win over Notre Dame. The unbeaten Cougars, now 6-0 for the third consecutive season, entered the matchup as 10.5-point underdogs. BYU received 20 first-place votes and sits 26 points ahead of No. 3 Ohio State, which earned nine.

The upheaval began with losses by several highly ranked teams. Georgia fell from No. 1 to No. 5 after losing at home to Auburn. Notre Dame, which lost to BYU, remained at No. 4, while Ohio State held third after beating Indiana on the road. Indiana dropped to No. 6.

Alabama slid seven places to No. 13 after losing at Tennessee, and Texas fell 12 spots to No. 19 following a home defeat by Florida. The Gators returned to the rankings at No. 20 after handing Texas its second consecutive loss. Arizona entered at No. 25 after four straight double-digit wins; Oklahoma State and Mississippi State dropped out.

Miami’s move to No. 1 comes during an unusually volatile stretch: the poll’s last two top-ranked teams, Texas and Georgia, each lost to an unranked opponent. The Hurricanes host unranked Pittsburgh next Saturday, according to the poll report.
