Dania Beach hit-and-run suspect faces charges after man dies on Sheridan Street
Keila Maldonado, 21, was arrested after a man was struck and killed near Sheridan Street and North Federal Highway. Investigators say she left the scene; a judge set her bond at $51,000.
A 21-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run early Saturday on Sheridan Street in Dania Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Keila Maldonado faces charges of failing to stop and remain at an accident involving death and tampering with or fabricating evidence. A judge set her bond at $51,000 during a court appearance Sunday.
Deputies and fire rescue crews responded around 1:32 a.m. to the 200 block of Sheridan Street, near North Federal Highway, where they found a man in the roadway. He was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released his identity.
Investigators say the man was crossing the westbound lanes when he was hit by a Hyundai whose driver continued on without stopping.
According to an arrest report, detectives traced the vehicle to a North Miami Beach dealership, where it had been left for repairs. A dealership employee told investigators Maldonado asked for an estimate and later said she had hit someone while driving near Hollywood and left, the report said. The vehicle was a rental, according to the report.
Maldonado told detectives she had taken the car from the dealership without permission the day before and driven to a Hollywood beach. She said she did not know which road she was on when she struck a person on a scooter, then parked at a nearby shopping plaza. She told investigators she saw police and ambulances arrive and stayed for about an hour but did not call law enforcement, the report said.
Several people told local television reporters that the stretch of Sheridan Street is dangerous. “It is dangerous. I’m sorry to hear that someone died,” said Edvard Legrand, pastor at a nearby church.
The charges are allegations; Maldonado’s account and the circumstances of the crash have not been tested in court.
