Miami survives Florida State in second overtime as top-two teams fall

MIAMI — The Hurricanes outlasted Florida State 43-35 in double overtime Saturday night, capping a back-and-forth rivalry game with a disputed end-zone interception and strengthening their case to rise to No. 1 in the AP Top 25.

Miami receiver Malachi Toney caught 11 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, including the decisive 3-yard score from quarterback Darian Mensah in the second overtime. Toney then threw a two-point conversion to Cooper Barkate, giving the Hurricanes an eight-point lead.

Florida State had one last chance to answer. Quarterback Ashton Daniels threw toward Duce Robinson in the end zone, where Miami’s Bryce Fitzgerald came down with the ball. Officials initially ruled it an interception, then upheld the call after review. Florida State players and coaches argued Robinson had scored.

“I thought it was a touchdown,” Daniels said, while acknowledging the decision was out of the Seminoles’ hands. Coach Mike Norvell also questioned the ruling, saying he believed a tie should favor the receiver.

The finish followed another disputed moment: a 36-yard completion on fourth-and-21 that would have set up a Florida State two-point attempt was wiped out by a holding penalty. The Seminoles settled for a final end-zone throw on the next play.

Miami improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Mensah completed 23 of 34 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Javian Mallory added 108 yards and two scores, and Mark Fletcher Jr. also ran for a touchdown.

Daniels threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns for Florida State, which fell to 3-4 and 1-3 in conference play. Robinson caught two late scoring passes, including a 75-yarder with 2:49 remaining in regulation that tied the game and a 20-yard touchdown to open overtime. Florida State also lost leading rusher Ousmane Kromah to a left-leg injury late in the first half.

Neither team held a lead for long. Miami went ahead 7-0 and 14-7, with Florida State answering each time. The Seminoles later led 21-14 before the Hurricanes tied the score, and the teams continued trading responses through regulation and overtime.

Miami’s win came as No. 1 Georgia lost to Auburn and No. 2 Notre Dame fell to BYU. The two top-ranked teams had not both lost on the same regular-season day since 2012, according to Sportradar, clearing a path for Miami to take the top spot in Sunday’s poll. Coach Mario Cristobal said the ranking was secondary to the team’s focus on winning its next game.

The rivalry result extended Miami’s run of success against Florida State: the Hurricanes have won seven of the teams’ last 10 meetings. Toney said the rivalry’s history mattered to him even though he had not lived through much of it.

Florida State’s loss also followed a defeat at Louisville in which the Seminoles were stopped on fourth down near the goal line. Against Miami, they again came up short on two fourth-down attempts inside the Hurricanes’ 5-yard line.

Florida State is scheduled to host Clemson on Oct. 31. Miami’s next game is at home against Pitt on Oct. 24.
