Miami takes top spot after historic week of college football upsets
The Hurricanes rose to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002 after beating Florida State in double overtime. BYU climbed to No. 2, its highest ranking since the Cougars’ 1984 national championship season.
Miami moved to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday, ending a 24-year wait for the top spot after a week of upsets reshaped college football’s rankings.
The unbeaten Hurricanes survived a double-overtime game against rival Florida State, while five of the AP poll’s top seven teams lost — the first time that has happened in the poll’s 90-year history. Miami jumped two places and received 40 of 70 first-place votes. It leads No. 2 BYU by 22 points.
The ranking marks Miami’s first time at No. 1 since the 2002 season, when the Hurricanes reached the national championship game against Ohio State. Miami is also the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to top the poll since Clemson in 2020; before Clemson, the last ACC team to hold the No. 1 spot was Florida State in 2014.
BYU surged to No. 2 after defeating Notre Dame 28-24 at home. The Cougars entered the game as 10.5-point underdogs and improved to 6-0. They collected 20 first-place votes and are ranked in the top five for the first time since 1996. Their No. 2 position is their highest since the 1984 season, when they won the national championship.
Ohio State is No. 3 after beating Indiana on the road and received nine first-place votes. Notre Dame, which also lost Saturday, held at No. 4, while Georgia fell from No. 1 to No. 5 after losing at home to Auburn. Georgia had held the top spot for one week.
Other major drops included Alabama, down seven places to No. 13 after a loss at Tennessee, and Texas, which fell 12 spots to No. 19 after losing at home to Florida. Florida returned to the poll at No. 20, and Arizona entered at No. 25. Oklahoma State and Mississippi State dropped out.
The shakeup leaves Miami with a new challenge as the top-ranked team: the Hurricanes are scheduled to host unranked Pittsburgh on Saturday.
