Two arrested after Doral man is held at gunpoint in fake iPhone sale, police say
A Doral man who brought $4,000 to buy iPhones through Facebook Marketplace was allegedly robbed and kidnapped after getting into a car outside his apartment building. Police say both suspects have been arrested, including a second man taken into custody during a Hallandale Beach traffic stop.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the armed robbery and kidnapping of a Doral man who was trying to buy iPhones through Facebook Marketplace, authorities said Monday.
The victim had previously completed a successful phone purchase through the platform with Lazaro Nunez-Martinez, 31, of Miami Gardens. Police said Nunez-Martinez later contacted him about buying more phones. The victim agreed and brought $4,000 in cash to meet him Friday outside the victim’s Doral apartment building.
As the victim opened the passenger door of Nunez-Martinez’s car, a second man, who had been lying in the back seat, sat up and pointed a gun at him, Doral Police Chief Matthew Castillo said. The man ordered the victim into the car, and Nunez-Martinez drove away with him held at gunpoint, police said.
The victim tried twice to get out and was strangled, Castillo said. When the car slowed near Northwest 66th Street and 78th Avenue, the victim threw the cash out of the vehicle. Police said the second suspect got out to retrieve it, allowing the victim to escape.
Investigators identified the second suspect as Darian Ernesto Morejon Rodriguez, 39. Nunez-Martinez was arrested and faces felony charges including kidnapping with a firearm, robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon, third-degree grand theft, witness tampering and battery.
Police said the victim later received a threatening text from Nunez-Martinez warning him not to take action and saying the suspects knew where he lived, according to an arrest document.
Rodriguez was arrested during a traffic stop Monday in Hallandale Beach, several hours after Nunez-Martinez’s first court appearance. He is expected to be transferred to Miami-Dade County for a bond hearing. As of Monday afternoon, Nunez-Martinez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond listed as to be set.
