Nearly 90 South Florida responders return from Hurricane Isaias relief mission
Nearly 90 first responders from Miami-Dade and Broward counties have returned to South Florida after helping communities in the Panhandle prepare for and respond to Hurricane Isaias. The crews left for Pensacola on Thursday, ahead of the storm’s landfall near Destin on Friday night as a Category 2 hurricane. Four people were killed — two in Florida and two in Alabama. South Florida teams searched some of the hardest-hit areas, including barrier islands. Two trained search dogs and their handlers flew by helicopter with the National Guard to look for anything local fire and emergency crews might have missed, said Roger Picard, a canine search specialist with Florida Task Force 2. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Omar Blanco, who serves with Florida Task Force 1, said responders prepared for different possible paths and impacts as the storm approached. The priority, he said, was protecting residents in the affected area and staying ready to deploy quickly. The deployment reflects a mutual-aid system in which Florida communities send emergency personnel to help one another during disasters. Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins said South Florida would expect assistance from elsewhere in the state if a hurricane struck the region. Responders said regular training helps crews prepare for deployments like this one.
