Port St. Lucie check-fraud investigation leads to New York man’s extradition

A 20-year-old New York man was extradited to St. Lucie County after Canadian border authorities detained him while he was attempting to enter Canada from the United States, authorities said.

Gibrill Diallo was apprehended on Oct. 14 and held at the Niagara County Jail in New York before being transferred to St. Lucie County on Oct. 21, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Diallo faces charges of money laundering, scheme to defraud and grand theft in connection with an investigation that began after a check mailed by a Port St. Lucie real estate company was allegedly stolen, altered and deposited into a bank account opened using someone else’s identity.

Investigators traced the money through several bank accounts and Zelle transfers, which authorities say were used to conceal its origin, before it reached an account belonging to Diallo.

The charges are allegations; the information provided by authorities does not establish guilt.
