Hollywood deploys barriers and pumps as king tides threaten Broward’s coast

High tides, heavy rain and strong onshore winds could combine to cause widespread flooding in South Florida through next week. Hollywood has added beach barriers, checked its pumps and may open parking garages so residents can move cars out of flood-prone areas.

Hollywood deploys barriers and pumps as king tides threaten Broward’s coast

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — South Florida communities are preparing for potentially widespread coastal flooding as king tides peak and forecasts call for heavy rain and strong onshore winds in the coming days.

In Hollywood, sandbags have been placed outside the Ocean Blu store on the Broadwalk. The business took on about a foot of water during a smaller king tide last month, and the city has since installed additional Tiger Dam barriers along the beach.

“If it’s a heavy rain, the same time as high tides, yes, I anticipate that we’ll have flooding throughout Hollywood,” said Shawn Fanshier, who observed the tides peaking Thursday morning.

Fort Lauderdale officials warned that water levels could reach unprecedented heights early next week. Nancy Gassman, the city’s chief resiliency officer, said tides are expected to be higher than previously recorded over the weekend and into Tuesday and Wednesday.

The extent of flooding will depend in part on whether rainfall coincides with high tide, Gassman said. That overlap could spread flooding across more roadways, she warned, and urged people in vulnerable areas to prepare now.

Hollywood may open beach parking garages so residents can move their vehicles away from saltwater flooding. City public works crews are also checking drainage equipment. Joann Hussey, a city spokeswoman, said the pumps were operational and auxiliary pumps had been deployed.

The combination of elevated tides, rain and onshore winds raises the risk that flooding could affect streets and businesses along the coast. City preparations are underway, but officials say the timing of the rain will be a key factor in how extensive the impacts become.
