Coral Terrace DUI crash that killed 83-year-old ends in six-year prison sentence
Allen Matis pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide after driving into Henri Bezy’s home and killing him as he slept. The Coral Gables developer will also face house arrest, probation and a lifetime driving ban.
MIAMI — Allen Matis, a 67-year-old real estate developer from Coral Gables, was sentenced Thursday to six years in state prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed 83-year-old Henri Bezy inside his home in the Coral Terrace area.
Matis pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide under an agreement with prosecutors. His sentence also includes two years of house arrest followed by six years of probation, a lifetime ban from driving and community service. He must pay Bezy’s family $250 on each anniversary of the crash.
The collision happened on the night of June 24 in the 2900 block of Southwest 57th Avenue, in unincorporated Miami-Dade County just outside Coral Gables. Matis was driving a Cadillac Lyriq on Palermo Avenue when he ran a stop sign and crashed through a wall of Bezy’s home. Bezy was asleep inside and died.
Investigators said Matis’ blood-alcohol level was between 0.245% and 0.29% — more than three times Florida’s legal limit. He had accelerated to 43 mph and did not brake before running the stop sign, according to deputies.
At Thursday’s hearing, Matis said he accepted responsibility and described Bezy’s death as a burden he would carry for the rest of his life. “I pray to Henri every night. I beg him for forgiveness,” he said.
The sentence offered little comfort to Bezy’s family. His 88-year-old sister, Claire Bezy, was in the house when the crash occurred. Speaking after the hearing, she said the loss had left “a complete void.”
Bezy’s friend Gary Wilcox said the crash also destroyed Claire Bezy’s home and left her to start over at 88. Matis’ attorney, Bruce Lehr, said his client had shown deep remorse.
The plea and sentence close the criminal case through an agreement, but the family continues to live with the loss and the destruction caused by the crash.
