A 21-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of an e-scooter rider after a collision in Miami-Dade County’s unincorporated Gladeview neighborhood, according to an arrest report and jail records.
The shooting occurred about 5:25 p.m. Aug. 23 at Northwest 75th Street and Northwest 22nd Court. Deputies responding to a report of a shooting found the victim unresponsive in grass with gunshot wounds. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medics pronounced him dead at 5:36 p.m. His identity has not been released.
Investigators say surveillance footage showed Michael Lamont Person riding east on Northwest 75th Street with a child while the victim traveled north on Northwest 22nd Court. The scooters collided at the intersection. Both men got off, and the child fell onto the pavement, the report states.
According to investigators, Person picked up the child and argued with the victim before drawing a gun and firing as the victim ran away. Person and the child then left westbound on Northwest 75th Street, the report says.
An autopsy conducted Aug. 24 determined the victim died of gunshot wounds, and the medical examiner classified the death as a homicide. Investigators received a Crime Stoppers tip identifying Person as a suspect on Aug. 31. A homicide detective and sheriff’s dispatch staff later identified him in surveillance images using facial-recognition software, according to the report. Witnesses identified him from images on Oct. 2.
Authorities have not said whether Person and the victim knew each other, and a motive remains unclear. As of Oct. 15, Person was held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The charge is an allegation; the case has not been resolved in court.
