Fort Lauderdale’s $666 million Prospect Lake water center begins service

Fort Lauderdale opened its new Prospect Lake Clean Water Center on Thursday, Oct. 15, beginning a major overhaul of the city’s drinking-water infrastructure.

The facility, at 3501 West Prospect Road, cost about $666 million to build, city officials said. It replaces the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant, which had been in service for nearly 70 years, as the city’s main source of treated drinking water.

Mayor Dean Trantalis described the center as an investment in the city’s future, saying it was designed to meet the needs of a growing population with modern technology and a more resilient water system. City officials said the project is intended to serve Fort Lauderdale and surrounding communities.

The opening marks a significant shift for local water service, as the city moves from an aging treatment plant to a newly built facility. Officials have not provided further details about the center’s capacity or how the project was funded.
