Four rescued after 26-foot catamaran overturns near Marathon

Four people were rescued Sunday after a 26-foot catamaran capsized about five miles south of Boot Key Harbor in Marathon, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

A mayday call from the boat prompted a Coast Guard response. Crews found the people on the overturned vessel and brought them to safety. Images of the rescue showed them gathered on top of the nearly submerged catamaran.

No injuries or pollution concerns were reported, according to the Coast Guard.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jackson Boggs, the Station Marathon coxswain during the rescue, said the boaters’ marine radio enabled them to call for help and helped crews respond quickly. He urged boaters to check marine forecasts before heading out and carry safety equipment, including a marine radio.

A small craft advisory was in effect at the time, the Coast Guard said.
