Florida investigates September intrusion into driver and vehicle records

Florida driver-license and motor-vehicle records were accessed in a Sept. 4 security breach by someone using compromised credentials, the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said Friday.

The department said it took steps to contain the unauthorized activity and secure its systems. It reported no evidence so far that the information had been misused, but did not say how many people’s records were accessed or specify what information was involved.

The investigation included the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The state plans to notify current driver-license and identification-card holders who may have been affected. Those notices are expected to include complimentary identity and credit monitoring, along with $1 million in identity-theft insurance for one year.

The breach involves records held by a state agency that administers driver licensing and motor-vehicle services. Until the state identifies the number of affected people and the data involved, residents cannot determine from the public announcement whether their records were exposed; the department said it will contact potentially affected cardholders.
