Coral Springs police say California man damaged synagogue menorah with shopping cart

A 44-year-old man from California was arrested Saturday after a security guard reported seeing him damage a menorah outside Chabad of Coral Springs, according to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report.

Police said the incident happened at about 11 a.m. Oct. 17 at the Chabad, 3925 N. University Drive. The guard told an officer that a man wearing a baseball cap and accompanied by a dog had struck the menorah with a shopping cart. The damage was estimated at approximately $5,000, the report said.

Officers issued a radio alert and soon located Matthew John Ryan near Wiles Road and North University Drive, pushing a Walmart cart with a pit bull inside, according to the report. Police said Ryan did not comply when ordered to get on the ground and argued that he had done nothing wrong, saying he was “in a production movie.”

The report says Ryan then reached into a satchel despite repeated commands to stop. An officer and sergeant took him to the ground, and police said he briefly struggled before being handcuffed. The security guard later identified Ryan as the person who damaged the menorah.

Ryan was taken to a hospital after telling police his blood sugar was high and his knee hurt, then transferred to Broward County’s main jail. He faces charges of criminal mischief involving a church, synagogue or mosque; obstructing an officer without violence; and illegally possessing a shopping or laundry cart. He was no longer listed in the online jail database as of Monday morning.

The arrest report describes allegations; the charges do not establish guilt.
