Bond denied for Medley workplace shooting suspect, 81

An 81-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his employer at a Medley repair shop was denied bond Friday by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer.

Jose Lopez appeared remotely from a hospital bed. He was arrested Thursday and is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Delio Trasobares, 61, owner of Metro Express Inc., according to an arrest report and court records.

The shooting happened shortly before 7:25 a.m. Wednesday at the company, an engineering and general contracting business at 9390 NW 109th St. A witness told deputies he saw Lopez fire a .40-caliber gun he had taken from a shelf, according to the report.

Deputies said Lopez told Trasobares, “I did it,” after the shooting. The report also says Lopez told a detective he was fed up with Trasobares’ insults and complaints.

According to the report, Lopez had been sleeping at the business, despite Trasobares having prohibited him from staying there. After the shooting, Lopez went outside to smoke, and Trasobares followed before collapsing at the repair shop entrance. The witness called 911.

Deputies found Trasobares with a gunshot wound to the chest. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead, the report said.
