Hillsborough teen charged after AI-edited post sparked shooting-threat investigation

A 15-year-old girl was arrested after Hillsborough County investigators said she sent Riverview High School an AI-altered image that appeared to show a student threatening a shooting at the campus.

School administrators received an email Wednesday containing a screenshot of an Instagram post threatening violence at the school, and deputies responded, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The post appeared to be from a male student, but detectives determined he had not made it.

Investigators linked the email to the boy’s former girlfriend, who had previously attended the school, authorities said. The teen admitted to sending the email with the altered image, according to the sheriff’s office.

She was charged with making a written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting, unlawful use of a two-way communications device and disrupting a school campus. The allegations have not been tested in court.

Authorities have not provided further details about the image or the investigation. The incident underscores how fabricated digital content can trigger a serious school safety response while falsely implicating another person.
