PHILADELPHIA — Zack Wheeler delivered a historic start, Brandon Marsh powered the offense and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied late to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 on Tuesday night. Wheeler struck out the first seven batters he faced, setting a Phillies franchise record for consecutive strikeouts to begin a game. He also reached 2,000 career strikeouts by fanning Milwaukee’s Brice Turang to end the first inning, becoming the 96th pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach the milestone. Wheeler finished with 11 strikeouts. He was on pace to challenge Pablo López’s major league record of nine consecutive strikeouts to start a game, but Milwaukee’s Cooper Pratt grounded out to third base for the second out of the third inning. Philadelphia led 3-1 before the Brewers scored twice against Wheeler in the sixth to tie the game. The Phillies regained the lead in the eighth when Bryson Stott singled to center against Colton Gordon with two outs. The inning turned on a throwing error during an attempt to catch Alec Bohm advancing from first to third. Garrett Mitchell’s throw struck Bohm’s foot and ricocheted away, allowing Bohm and Luis Arraez to score. The play gave Philadelphia a 5-3 lead. Marsh homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who entered the night holding the National League’s final wild-card position with a four-game cushion over Arizona. Philadelphia began the day one game behind both San Diego and Chicago for the top wild-card spot. The Phillies hold a tiebreaker advantage over the Padres but not the Cubs. William Contreras drove in three runs for Milwaukee. The Brewers, who lead the NL Central, had already clinched a wild-card-round bye and home-field advantage in the National League Division Series after Cincinnati beat Atlanta 4-0 earlier Tuesday. Milwaukee fell to 13-6 in September and could not add to the franchise-record 98 victories it established Sunday with a 3-0 win at Baltimore. José Alvarado earned the win after recording the final out of the eighth inning, and Jhoan Duran closed the game for his 33rd save. The teams continue their three-game series Wednesday night. Milwaukee right-hander Logan Henderson, 10-3 with a 2.51 earned-run average, is scheduled to face Philadelphia right-hander Aaron Nola, 7-10 with a 4.49 ERA.
