EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed was hospitalized Sunday after suffering a neck injury during the opening drive of the team’s 20-17 overtime victory over the New York Jets. Reed had movement in his extremities after the injury, but Packers coach Matt LaFleur said the third-year receiver would stay overnight at a New Jersey hospital for observation. The team said it would not provide another update Sunday or estimate when Reed might return to football. The injury occurred on Green Bay’s second offensive play. Reed caught a short pass from quarterback Jordan Love and gained 4 yards before being hit by Jets linebacker Demario Davis. Davis’ left shoulder pad appeared to strike Reed in the helmet, and Reed immediately went to the ground. Medical personnel attended to Reed for several minutes before placing him on a backboard and taking him from the field by cart. Packers players gathered around him, with many kneeling, while several Jets defenders, including Davis, remained nearby. Play resumed after the delay. The Packers lost another starter on the same opening drive. Right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele injured his knee while blocking Jets rookie pass rusher David Bailey and was also carted off the field. He did not return, and Anthony Belton replaced him at right tackle. Green Bay also saw guard Aaron Banks leave with a toe injury, while his replacement, Donovan Jennings, hurt his hand. Defensive tackle Anthony Campbell sustained an ankle injury. The Jets ruled out linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball with an ankle injury, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa with a quadriceps injury and defensive lineman David Onyemata with a groin injury after halftime. Tight end Mason Taylor injured a thumb in the fourth quarter. Reed, a key part of Green Bay’s receiving corps, was selected by the Packers in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft. His status will remain uncertain pending further medical evaluation.
