MADISON, Wis. — Enrollment across the Universities of Wisconsin fell modestly this fall, with the system’s preliminary Day One count showing 163,260 students at its 13 universities. That is 1,732 fewer students than last fall. About 1,100 of the decline came from international students, meaning international enrollment accounted for roughly two-thirds of the system’s overall drop. Despite the decrease, system officials said enrollment remains above 160,000 and reflects continued demand for Wisconsin’s public universities. “More than 163,000 students chose a Universities of Wisconsin university this fall, a strong sign that demand remains steady,” interim system President Renée Wachter said. “These students and their families are making an investment in their future and Wisconsin’s future.” UW-Madison’s preliminary enrollment remained above 50,000, at an estimated 50,500 students. UW-Milwaukee grew to about 23,000 students, helped by its largest entering class in 17 years. Other reported campus totals included 12,270 students at UW-Whitewater and 6,140 at UW-Platteville. The figures are preliminary. The Universities of Wisconsin is expected to release its more complete 10th-day enrollment totals the following week, and those numbers may change as campuses finalize their counts.
