Madison police investigate shooting after teen hurt during attempted handgun purchase

A teen arrived at UW Hospital East around 8 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the chest, Madison police said. Investigators say the teen was struck with a handgun during an attempted purchase, causing it to fire.

MADISON, Wis. — Madison police are investigating after a teen was pistol-whipped and shot in the chest while trying to buy a handgun Tuesday night, according to police. The teen arrived at UW Hospital East at about 8 p.m. Police said the teen initially gave changing accounts of what had happened. Investigators later determined the teen had gone to purchase a handgun and was handing cash to the seller when another person struck them with a gun. Police said the blow caused the handgun to fire, hitting the teen in the chest. The department has not released the teen’s age, condition, the location of the attempted sale or information about any suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
