A 31-year-old Madison man was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for an armed robbery at a Baraboo financial services store, according to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office. Dashun Williams entered the Cash Store on South Boulevard in February 2025 and waited until only two employees remained, prosecutors said. He then displayed a gun, threatened to kill the manager and forced the employees to the back of the business. One employee was ordered to empty the safe and teller drawers while the other was made to lie face down, officials said. Williams later directed both employees into a bathroom and warned them not to leave until he had gone. He took approximately $4,600, according to prosecutors. Investigators identified Williams after the getaway vehicle’s license plate was covered but a Sauk County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher recognized its distinctive wheel rims. The vehicle had also been photographed traveling toward Baraboo earlier that morning. Officials then traced it to a person under GPS monitoring, whose location data placed that person at the store during the robbery. Sauk County District Attorney Michael Albrecht said the case illustrates both the investigative value and the unresolved public debate surrounding automated license plate reader cameras. “There is a real debate over ALPR cameras, and this case is a specific example that belongs in it,” Albrecht said, referring to automated license plate reader technology. He said the camera information helped investigators identify a person who had concealed the vehicle’s plate. Williams was under state supervision when the robbery occurred. He previously was convicted of armed robbery in Dane County in 2012. In addition to the 10-year prison sentence, Williams was ordered to serve 10 years of extended supervision.
