A 45-year-old Galesville man was sentenced to 90 days in the Columbia County Jail after a plea and sentencing hearing Friday in a case that began when investigators found his dog dead from a suspected gunshot wound in the Town of Otsego. Timothy Westvik was charged with two counts of possessing a firearm as a person convicted of an out-of-state felony. One count was dismissed at the hearing, according to online court records. The available case details describe firearm-possession charges; they do not report a conviction for shooting or killing the dog. The investigation began May 20, when authorities responded to a report of a suspicious incident near County Highway B and Domes Road. Deputies found the dog dead in the woods. A Columbia County sheriff’s detective took the animal to a veterinarian, who believed it had died from a gunshot wound to the head. Detectives identified the dog’s owner and contacted Westvik at a nearby campground. Investigators then learned he was a convicted felon and possessed a firearm, according to prosecutors. The judge ordered the firearm confiscated. Westvik received seven days of sentence credit and was ordered to report to the county jail Oct. 9. His sentence includes Huber privileges, which can allow eligible people in custody to leave jail for approved purposes.
