Free harm-reduction supplies now available at four Dane County sites
Two new vending machines in Sun Prairie and Stoughton bring free harm-reduction supplies beyond Madison. The county’s four machines offer items including fentanyl test strips, naloxone and sharps containers.
Dane County has added free harm-reduction vending machines in Sun Prairie and Stoughton, expanding a program that began with two machines in Madison last year.
The machines are at Sunshine Place in Sun Prairie, the emergency department entrance at Stoughton Health, and the emergency departments at UW Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital. They operate like standard vending machines, but users do not have to pay.
Supplies include fentanyl test strips, socks, gun locks and sharps containers. The first two Madison machines also provided naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.
County Executive Melissa Agard said the machines are intended to make health resources accessible to people when and where they need them, describing the effort as a lifeline rather than a way of enabling substance use.
Agard and other advocates are also urging residents to carry naloxone in a car or purse so it may be available if someone nearby experiences an overdose.
