Fitchburg’s 25th Oak Bank pumpkin event gives away 1,500 pumpkins in hours
Oak Bank’s annual fall gathering in Fitchburg ran out of all 1,500 free pumpkins by 11 a.m. Saturday, an hour before it was scheduled to end. Cash donations from the event will support GiGi’s Playhouse Madison, which offers programs for people with Down syndrome.
FITCHBURG, Wis. — Families claimed all 1,500 pumpkins at Oak Bank’s annual giveaway by 11 a.m. Saturday, an hour before the event was scheduled to wrap up at noon.
The 25th annual Great Pumpkin Giveaway included tractor rides, games, candy and visits with local mascots. The pumpkins were free, and organizers encouraged attendees to contribute $5. All cash donations collected will go to GiGi’s Playhouse Madison, a nonprofit that provides educational, therapeutic and career-development programs for people with Down syndrome.
“We really sincerely feel that we need to give back to the community that has helped make us successful,” said Jim McNulty, an Oak Bank employee who has worked there for more than 25 years.
McNulty’s daughter, Maggie, volunteered at the event for the first time Saturday. She said she grew up hearing about the tradition and enjoyed meeting families in Fitchburg.
Oak Bank says more than 40,000 pumpkins have been distributed since the giveaway began. McNulty said the gathering offers neighbors a chance to spend time together and meet in person. Maggie said she hopes families remember both the festivities and the cause supported by their donations.
