Elba intersection crash kills Jefferson man; responding officer also hurt
A 77-year-old SUV driver died after a collision with a semitrailer Thursday morning in Dodge County. A separate crash during the investigation struck a sheriff’s community service officer, causing minor injuries.
A 77-year-old man from Jefferson was killed Thursday morning when his SUV and a semitrailer collided at State Highway 16/60 and County Road BB in the town of Elba, according to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash was reported shortly before 7 a.m. Investigators said the SUV was traveling west on Highway 16/60 and the semitrailer was heading south on County BB when the truck driver failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the SUV. The SUV driver died at the scene. The semitrailer driver, a 28-year-old Waterloo man, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
As authorities investigated and closed the highway, a second crash occurred at Highway 16/60 and County Road T. A vehicle hit the sheriff’s community service officer’s vehicle, which had its emergency lights on, and pushed it into the officer. The officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Highway 16/60 was closed for nearly three hours. The Wisconsin State Patrol and Dodge County Sheriff’s Office are investigating both crashes. The sheriff’s office urged drivers to stay attentive and avoid distractions.
