East Madison Hospital expansion set to add six operating rooms

East Madison Hospital expansion set to add six operating rooms

UW Health’s East Madison Hospital is scheduled to open a $140 million expansion on Nov. 2, adding operating rooms, recovery space and inpatient beds to the Madison facility.

The 120,000-square-foot addition will increase the hospital’s operating rooms from 14 to 20, surgical preparation and recovery bays from 23 to 60, and inpatient beds from 84 to 98. UW Health estimates the added capacity will allow about 30% more surgeries and 6% more inpatient admissions.

The system said demand has grown since the hospital opened in 2015. Annual surgical procedures have increased from 6,000 to 14,000, while inpatient admissions have doubled from 2,200 to 4,400.

The expanded facility will also offer specialized services in gynecology, gynecologic oncology, ophthalmology and urology. UW Health said it has hired 250 employees to staff the additional space.

Ryann DeGraff, UW Health’s vice president and regional chief operating officer, said the project is intended to improve access and help patients receive care in an appropriate setting. The expansion represents a substantial increase in the hospital’s ability to handle procedures and admissions, though UW Health’s projected capacity gains do not by themselves establish how quickly patients will be able to access care.
