Beloit to get 10 Habitat homes, its first since 2008

A $350,000 grant will help Habitat for Humanity restart homebuilding in Beloit, with five homes planned in the town and five in the city. The nonprofit says it still needs more fundraising, volunteers and community support to complete the project.

Beloit to get 10 Habitat homes, its first since 2008
Habitat for Humanity plans to build 10 homes in Beloit, its first housing project there since 2008, after receiving a $350,000 grant from the Hendricks Family Foundation. The project will include five homes in the Town of Beloit and five in the City of Beloit. Habitat for Humanity Waukesha-Jefferson-Rock Counties announced the grant Monday, Oct. 12. The town homes, part of a development called Avid Pointe, will be built on land donated by a member of the Hendricks family. In the city, the homes are planned for the Hackett neighborhood on lots donated by the City of Beloit. Habitat WJR CEO Melissa Songco called the grant a starting point for the organization’s work in Rock County and said the nonprofit was looking forward to bringing its mission back to the community. She said completing all 10 homes will require additional fundraising, volunteer labor and community support. Hendricks Family Foundation Executive Director Lisa Furseth said the foundation chose to support the project because Habitat WJR has experience building starter homes intended to help local families move toward homeownership. She said a range of housing options is important to a thriving community. Site preparation for the Town of Beloit homes is expected to begin later this month. Work on the city lots is scheduled to follow in spring. The homes are expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028. Residents interested in volunteering can find information at habitatwjr.org.
